NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

Start or continue the pill, without a GP appointment

Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, our pharmacist can start you on oral contraception for the first time, restart it after a break, or provide ongoing supplies of your current pill — all free of charge and without needing to see your GP.

Starting the pill

A confidential consultation covering your health, lifestyle and preferences, plus a blood pressure and weight check, so the pharmacist can safely supply a suitable combined or progestogen-only pill.

Ongoing supplies

Already on the pill? We can take over your repeat supplies with a quick suitability review at each visit — no more waiting for GP appointments just to stay on your usual contraception.

Free and confidential

The service is funded by the NHS, so there's nothing to pay. Everything discussed stays between you and the pharmacist in our private consultation room.

Honest advice

If the pill isn't right for you, or you're interested in other options such as long-acting contraception, we'll explain the alternatives and signpost you to the right service.

Walk-ins are welcome — no appointment needed. Bring a note of any medicines you take, and if you know your usual pill's name, that helps too.

Common questions

Contraception service FAQs

Who can use the service?
Anyone seeking oral contraception can be assessed. Suitability depends on your health and history — the pharmacist checks this during your consultation, including blood pressure, and will advise if a GP review is more appropriate.
How much can I be supplied with?
Typically several months' supply at a time, depending on your circumstances and whether it's your first supply or a repeat — the pharmacist will confirm during your visit.
Is emergency contraception available too?
Yes — ask at the counter and you'll be seen privately and promptly. If we can't help for any reason, we'll tell you immediately where you can be seen the same day.

Ready when you are

Pop in during opening hours for a confidential chat in our private consultation room — or call ahead if you'd like to check the pharmacist's availability first.
